The Pere Marquette River
Lodge brings together more understanding fly tackle than any other
shop in the Midwest. Our knowledgeable staff can help you find the
right rod or reel for any angling situation. Our guides have put
together the Guides' Choice program, where you can get the
tackle and flies the professionals use. Order anything over $25
from us and we will pay the shipping and handling. It's cheaper
than shopping with Orvis directly, and you'll get personal attention
to your flyfishing needs. Call 231-745-3972.

Guides’
Choice for Steelhead and Salmon
Rods
**Orvis
Silver Label 968 mid-flex 9.0**
If
you look in the 2001 catalog, you won't find this rod. Orvis has
pulled it from production, but we special ordered them for our shop.
Our guides swear by this rod as the best all-around choice for Great
Lakes steelheading and salmon fishing. Its combination of length,
power, and sensitivity is unsurpassed. The 9 ½ foot length allows
better control of drifts and easier reaching. Silver Label version
– a more Spartan exterior but the same blank as the Trident version:
$275.
Orvis Trident Trident
TL and Silver Label TL 107 mid flex 7.5
A
great long and light rod for steelhead. Extra length and great
fighting strength. This is the number one choice for steelheading.

Orvis
Vortex 7/8
Our guides love the incredible large arbor Vortex reel. Each
turn of the handle picks up 11 inches of line, ideal for handling
hard charging steelies when they turn toward you. The drag
has 45% more surface area than the competition (Abel, Tibor)
to slow down those big fish. Will handle an 8 wt line with
200 yds 20 lb backing or 150 yds 30 lb. Available in black
or gold finish. $530. More

Orvis Battenkill
Large Arbor 7/8
This is the large arbor reel for the rest of us – great drag,
rapid line pickup, and only $220. The fully machined Orvis
Battenkill Large Arbor is new for 2000 and we love them. Using
the proven Battenkill disk drag system and high grade aluminum,
Orvis has created the best value on the market. It is a true
large arbor reel, not just an empty centered spool put on a
regular frame like so many of the competitors offer. The 7/8
is 3 5/8” in diameter, weighs just 6.37 ounces, and picks up
11-12 inches of line with each turn of the handle. That’s as
fast as a typical spinning reel! When the fish turns and swims
toward you, be ready: Get a Large Arbor Battenkill today.
$220, extra spools $95 each. More

Lines
Orvis Wonderline
Running Line
For the majority of our steelhead and salmon fishing on the Pere
Marquette and other rivers, we use a running line with “slinky”
weight combination. It is the best way we have found to get our
flies down to the fish quickly and keep them in the “strike zone”
for the longest period of time. The 0.034 inch diameter running
line is supple in the cold weather and easy to handle. Its low
stretch allows you to turn big fish quickly. The bright yellow
color provides excellent visibility for the low light periods when
fish are most active. $30.
Dai-Riki Running
Line
This is a guide favorite because of its feel, ease in handling,
and usability in cold weather situations. We love this stuff. $24.95,
available in two diameters.
Leader
and Tippets
Maxima.
Period. Only one line has proven itself for steelheading – Maxima
Ultragreen. Cold water conditions really weaken the knot strength
of most monofilament. Maxima holds strong and resists abrasion
well. We use 6 LB for most steelheading, 8 LB for low light steelheading
and salmon fishing, and 10 LB when the salmon are fresh and fully
loaded. When the water’s clear and the fish are spooky on the gravel,
we drop down to 5 lb. $3.25 a spool.
